Intellectual Property

Los Angeles Times, et al. v. Free Republic, et al.

On September 28, 1998, the Los Angeles Times and other news publishers filed suit for copyright infringement against the owners of a Web site where members post the entire text of news articles on the site and others comment on them. On March 31, 2000, U.S. District Court Judge Margaret Morrow of the Central District of California ruled that fair use does not protect the full-text copying of newspaper articles on the Internet, even if the Web site in question is used for public comment on the articles.
